Pre-step: strain selection — choose your seeds first
Most beginner mistakes start before step 1 — by choosing the wrong genetics. A sensitive 14-week sativa in a 2×2 ft tent with a mediocre LED will fail. A robust indica-dominant autoflower in the same setup gives you a reasonable harvest.
Photoperiod vs autoflower: the first choice
Photoperiod seeds flower when you switch the light schedule from 18/6 to 12/12. Upsides: maximum yield per plant, training-friendly (LST, topping), you decide when to flower. Downsides: longer cycle (15–22 weeks total), more sensitive to light leaks in the dark cycle, lower error tolerance.
Autoflower seeds flower automatically with age (usually week 4–5), regardless of light schedule. Upsides: 8–11 weeks seed to harvest, can run on 20/4 or even 24/0 light, no dark-cycle sensitivity, more forgiving of beginner mistakes. Downsides: smaller plants, limited training, no veg "wait" phase.
Indica, sativa, or hybrid: what fits your setup
The old "indica = relax / sativa = energy" split is largely genetic nonsense (see Indica vs Sativa — what the genetics actually say), but the growth differences matter for the grower. For a 2×2 or 3×3 ft tent + a 100–200W LED: choose indica-dominant or indica-leaning hybrid. Names like Northern Lights Auto, Critical Auto, and White Widow Auto are reliable, forgiving beginner strains.
Buy feminized seeds from a reputable seed bank — avoid random marketplace listings, where genetic instability costs you 16 weeks of work. (Seed legality varies by country; check local rules.)

Step 1: What you need
For one plant indoors (final yield ~2–4 oz dry), a realistic total startup investment is $500–$800:
- Grow tent — 2×2 or 3×3 ft — Mars Hydro 2×2 or AC Infinity 3×3 — $90–$250

Step 2: Germination (week 0, days 1–7)
The simplest method: seed in a moist Grodan 1.5" rockwool plug or jiffy pellet, on a warmth mat (68–77 °F / 20–25 °C). Within 2–5 days you'll see a white taproot. Then gently move into a 1 L starter pot with a light substrate, 1 cm deep, lightly watered.
Important: most failures happen here. Too wet = rot. Too dry = the seed dies. The plug should feel "moist but not dripping."
Step 3: Seedling stage (weeks 1–2)
The first leaves (cotyledons) appear, then the first true serrated leaves. LED at 60% power, 20–24 in (50–60 cm) above the seedling. Light schedule: 18 hours on / 6 off. Humidity: 60–70%. Temp: 72–77 °F (22–25 °C). No nutrients — a light starter substrate has enough for the first 2 weeks.
Step 4: Vegetation (weeks 3–6)
The plant now grows fast. Transplant into the final pot with your main substrate. Light schedule: 18/6 continues. LED at 80–100% power. Nutrients: introduce a grow-stage feed at a low dose from week 4 (watch for nitrogen and magnesium deficiency).
Training (optional but recommended): Low-stress training (LST) — bend the main top gently to the side to get more "tops." Topping — remove the top to generate two new top branches. Both raise yield 30–50%.
Step 5: Flowering (weeks 7–14)
Switch the light schedule to 12 hours on / 12 off. This triggers flowering in photoperiod strains. Autoflowers flower automatically with age and don't need the switch.
The feed shifts to bloom: a bloom-stage nutrient from flower week 2, with EC slowly rising from ~1.4 in early flower to ~1.8 at peak (see the pH and EC guide).
Climate: lower humidity to 40–50% in late flower to prevent mold. Temp 72–79 °F (22–26 °C) by day, 64–72 °F (18–22 °C) at night.
Pest & disease prevention
Most first-grow failures aren't nutrients or light — they're pests and mold. The top problems indoors: spider mites, thrips, powdery mildew, and root rot.
Spider mites
Symptoms: tiny white/yellow dots on the top of leaves (stippling), fine webbing on the underside in advanced stages. Under a 10× loupe you'll see red or yellow dots moving on the leaf underside.
Prevention + treatment: keep humidity above 50% in veg (mites love dry air), inspect leaf undersides weekly, run a circulating fan (mites dislike moving air). Early stage: spray leaf undersides with Verdana cold-pressed neem oil (5 ml/L + a drop of dish soap as emulsifier) in the evening, every 4 days, 3× in a row.
Powdery mildew
Symptoms: white powdery spots on the top of leaves — looks like flour. Often starts on the lower plant where air stagnates.
Prevention: keep RH under 60% in veg, under 50% in flower, constant air circulation, and remove the bottom 2–3 leaf layers ("lollipopping") for airflow. Full protocol: mold prevention.
Root rot (Pythium)
Symptoms: leaves droop despite "wet" substrate, yellowing from the bottom up, roots turn brown and slimy (healthy roots are white and firm).
Prevention: don't overwater — wait until the pot feels clearly lighter. Use fabric pots (air-permeable). Keep substrate temperature above 64 °F (18 °C). In hydro, keep dissolved oxygen up with an air stone.
Step 6: Flush & harvest (weeks 14–16)
Stop all nutrients 1–2 weeks before harvest. Give only pH-corrected water. This "flushes" built-up salts and improves flavor.

Step 7: Drying & curing (weeks 16–18)
