You can't fix what you don't measure

Every mold problem is a humidity problem you didn't see in time. A logging hygrometer that alerts your phone when RH crosses the mold threshold is the cheapest insurance against losing a harvest to bud rot overnight.

The Short Version

Mold in an indoor grow tent is almost always preventable — but almost always caught too late. One night with humidity above 65% in late flower can lose a whole harvest to botrytis. This guide explains how mold grows, the three types you'll meet in a tent, and how to set climate per growth stage to stay ahead of every one.

The three molds that matter

In an indoor grow tent you'll realistically meet three mold types. Each has a different cause, different symptoms, and a different fix.

1. Botrytis (grey mold, "bud rot")

What: grey-brown, fuzzy mold tissue inside a bud. Starts deep in dense buds where air doesn't reach. Multiplies fast — an undetected 1 cm² spot becomes a whole bud in 48 hours.

When: late flower (week 9+), at humidity >55% and stagnant air inside the buds. Risk climbs exponentially as buds get more compact.

Loss risk: high. One spot in a big bud = throw out the whole bud (botrytis toxin makes the rest inedible even without visible damage).

2. Powdery mildew

What: a white powdery layer on leaves, like talc. Spreads via airborne spores that persist for years (in dust, on grow-room surfaces).

When: any stage, but peaks at humidity 65–85% + poor air circulation + temperature stress (a large day/night swing). Veg is most vulnerable from dense leaf structure.

Loss risk: medium. Caught early (first 1–2 leaves) it's survivable. Spread to 5+ leaves and it's worth a whole-room sanitation.

3. Root rot (Pythium)

What: roots turn brown, slimy, smell of rot. Above ground the plant shows drought symptoms despite wet substrate (because the dead roots no longer take up water).

When: overwatered substrate, too-warm root zone (above 24 °C / 75 °F in DWC), too little oxygen. Almost only a problem in hydro systems (DWC with a failed air pump) or chronic overwatering in soil.

Loss risk: total. Once Pythium is established in a DWC reservoir = sanitize the whole system + clean the tank + transplant every plant.

The four dials that control mold

Mold is a mathematical function of four parameters. Watch them = prevention; let one slip = invitation.

Why the day/night difference matters so much

When the LED switches off, the air temperature in the tent drops (often 5–14 °F / 3–8 °C). Cold air holds less water — so RH rises without any water being added. A tent at 72 °F / 50% RH by day can swing on its own to 64 °F / 70% RH at night. That's botrytis weather.

The fix: raise nighttime ventilation (timer-driven), or run a small dehumidifier in the tent targeting 50% RH 24/7.

Late flower is why you actively lower RH from week 9+: the further into flower, the denser the buds, the less air gets in — and the faster mold spreads. 35–45% RH in late flower isn't strict, it's preventive.

Hardware stack for climate control

For a 3×3 ft tent in a normal living space (not a damp basement/attic/garage):

The full stack is a one-time spend — cheaper than a single harvest lost to botrytis.

Early-warning checklist

A daily 30-second inspection (before lights-out). Check one by one:

  1. Leaves at the bottom of the plant. White/powdery layer? Powdery mildew starts here. Look top, middle, and under the plant — use a phone flashlight.
  2. Stem base. Discoloration (brown/black) where the stem meets the substrate? Early root rot, or stem rot from overwatering.
  3. Air under the canopy. Put your hand in — does it feel stagnant and humid? Reposition the circulation fan, or add a second.
  4. Inside the biggest bud. From week 8. Gently open a bud — see any grey spots? Cut and discard immediately.
  5. Substrate smell. Smell the top of the pot. Earthy = good. Sweet/rotting = early root rot, pull the plant and check the roots.

The inspection takes less time than making coffee. But miss it 2 days in a row in late flower and you can lose the whole harvest.

What to do at the first sign

Botrytis (grey-brown in a bud)

  1. Cut at least 2 inches around the affected spot immediately. Don't "trim" — a clean cut.
  2. Affected material into a plastic bag, straight out of the grow room. Not into compost.
  3. Lower RH by 5–10% via extra ventilation/dehumidifier.
  4. Inspect EVERY 12 hours until harvest. Botrytis spreads at night.
  5. Consider an early harvest if >20% of buds are affected — better a few days early than a whole plant lost.

Powdery mildew (white powder on leaves)

  1. Remove all affected leaves. Cut them at the base; don't pick up leaves that have fallen.
  2. Spray remaining leaves with a 1:9 milk-water solution (a genuinely working biological remedy) or a commercial sulfur product (NOT during flower).
  3. Improve air circulation. Most mildew outbreaks follow a failed circulation fan.
  4. Don't spray while plants are in flower — it raises botrytis risk.
  5. After this cycle: clean the whole tent with isopropyl before the next grow. Mildew spores survive for years.

Root rot (brown/slimy roots)

  1. Take the plant out of the pot/DWC. Inspect the roots visually.
  2. Trim affected roots (brown/slimy). White/light-brown roots can stay.
  3. Rinse roots under running water, or in an H₂O₂ bath (3% peroxide, diluted 1:10) for 2 minutes.
  4. Return the plant to fresh substrate or fresh DWC water with an enzyme/peroxide.
  5. Find the cause: overwatering? Failed air pump? Too-warm reservoir? Fix it before continuing.

Preventive additives — no substitute for climate

You'll sometimes see "anti-mold" products advertised. Honestly: most work poorly without good climate control. Climate is always the first line. But these are useful as a supplement:

What humidity should I target during late flower to prevent bud rot? 45-50% RH in week 7-12. Above 55% in dense bud canopies = bud rot risk multiplies exponentially. Above 60% = guaranteed bud rot within 72 hours in indoor tents. The killer scenario: 18°C night temp + 60% RH = condensation inside the bud cores → invisible mold start that you can't see until cola-section reveals brown rot. Buy a logging hygrometer (not just dial type), set alerts at 55% so you can intervene before crossing 60%.

Can I save a bud that's already showing bud rot, or do I cut the whole branch? Cut the WHOLE affected cola, plus 4-6 inches below the visible damage, with sterilized scissors (70% isopropyl wipe between cuts). Bud rot (botrytis) spreads through internal connective tissue you can't see — by the time you see brown on the outside, the rot has already moved 2-3 inches deeper. Leaving "just the brown part" guarantees the rest of that cola will rot in days. Better to lose 20% of yield than 80%.

Does spraying neem oil prevent bud rot? No — neem oil prevents some PESTS (spider mites, thrips), not fungi. Bud rot is caused by Botrytis cinerea (a fungus). Use copper-based fungicides (Bordeaux mixture) early in veg only, never within 30 days of harvest (residue concern). The real prevention is climate control + canopy management, not spraying. Defoliating dense colas in week 5-6 (removing leaves blocking air to bud cores) gets air into the bud cores where rot starts.

What's the difference between bud rot and white powdery mildew (WPM)? Bud rot (botrytis) = grey/brown mushy core inside dense buds, "smells off", spreads from inside out. WPM = white powdery dust on leaves and bud surfaces, surface-only at first, spreads outside-in. Different fungi, different conditions: bud rot loves cool (15-22°C) + wet, WPM loves warm (22-30°C) + still-air. Bud rot during late flower = harvest immediately. WPM = treatable with 1% milk spray (yes, dairy milk) in early stage, but final cure remains airflow + lower RH.

Should I dry my buds in the same tent that had bud rot? Only after FULL sterilization. The spores stay in the canvas, on the poles, in the carbon filter. Process: vacuum tent interior, wipe all surfaces with 70% isopropyl, replace the carbon filter (spores nest in old activated carbon), run UV-C light cycle if available (15-min sterilization, then ventilate before re-entry — UV is harmful to skin/eyes). Dry the buds in a DIFFERENT room if possible. Skipping sterilization re-infects the new harvest within 24-48h of moving it back in.
