For LED lighting in a grow tent there's a simple formula: 200–300 real watts per m² (roughly 19–28 watts per square foot). Below that you get weak flower and stretchy plant structure. Above it, you waste electricity with no extra yield.

"Real watts" is crucial. Ignore the "1000W equivalent" marketing — look at the power draw at the wall. A Mars Hydro TS-1000 pulls 150W, not 1000W. A TS-3000 pulls 450W.

PPE — why it matters

PPE (photosynthetic photon efficacy) measures how much photosynthetic light you get per watt of electricity. Higher PPE = more light for the same power bill.

A difference of 0.2 µmol/J ≈ 7–10% extra yield at the same wattage. Over 5 cycles (a year), a premium LED pays for itself in 1–2 years.

UV-IR — yes or no?

UV (ultraviolet): stimulates terpene production (smell/flavor). Effect: 5–8% more aromatic compounds. The Mars Hydro TSW series has it standard; the TS series doesn't.

IR (infrared): helps flower density and simulates a setting sun (signaling the plant into flower mode). Effect: 3–5% denser flower clusters.
