Cannabis Nitrogen Deficiency — How to Diagnose It by Stage
Before you add more nutrients — measure
Nearly every "nitrogen deficiency" that turns out to be something else (pH lockout, overwatering) is caught by two cheap tools: a digital EC/TDS meter and a pH pen. They pay for themselves the first time they stop you wasting a week feeding a plant that couldn't absorb it.

The Short Version
Nitrogen deficiency is the most common nutrient problem in indoor cannabis — and also the most confusing. Loss of green, yellowing leaves, slow growth: that can be nitrogen, but it can just as easily be pH lockout, overwatering, or a magnesium deficiency disguising itself as nitrogen. This guide walks through what you actually see, stage by stage, why it happens, and how to correct it within 48 hours — after you've ruled out the look-alikes.
What nitrogen does in the plant
Nitrogen (N) is the building block of chlorophyll — the pigment that turns light into energy. It's also the basis of most of the proteins and enzymes a plant needs to grow. A plant short on N literally can't build new cells anymore, so it starts cannibalizing old leaves to move their nitrogen up to new growth points. That's why a true nitrogen deficiency always shows up at the bottom of the plant first.
In the vegetative stage cannabis burns through enormous amounts of nitrogen. In flower the N requirement actually drops — so light yellowing of the lowest leaves is then normal, not a deficiency. Diagnosis therefore depends not just on what you see, but on when you see it.

Visual symptoms by growth stage
Seedling stage (weeks 1–2)
A true nitrogen deficiency here is very rare: starter substrate (Light-Mix, jiffy, rockwool) holds enough N for the first 2 weeks, and the cotyledons (seed leaves) supply the plant's own reserves. If you see yellowing at this stage it's almost never N — look first at overwatering, cold substrate, or weak light.
Vegetative stage (weeks 3–6)
This is where 80% of all true N deficiencies happen. Symptoms, in the order they appear:
- Lower leaves turn light green → yellow. Not spotted — uniform yellow. The yellowing starts at the leaf tip and works toward the stem.
- Leaves droop. Not dry, just energy-less.
- The whole plant looks pale compared with its normal dark-green tone.
- Slow growth. The main top adds <1 cm per day instead of 2–4 cm.
- Lower leaves drop off — cotyledons first, then real leaves.
Early flower (weeks 7–10)
This is where diagnosis gets tricky. A little yellowing of the lower leaves is normal — the plant is moving N from leaves to flowers. Be careful about "correcting" it: extra N in flower slows bud formation.
A real deficiency here: the yellowing climbs fast (3+ leaf layers up in 5 days) and the plant stops growing. That's a problem. Normal: only the lowest 1–2 layers slowly yellow and stay attached.
Late flower (week 11+)
Here yellow leaves are almost always not a problem — it's what you want. The plant is pulling all its N out of the leaves and into the buds. Fully yellow fan leaves in week 13 are a sign of approaching harvest, not a deficiency to correct.
What looks like nitrogen deficiency but isn't
1. pH lockout (mix-up #1)
When the root-zone pH falls outside 5.8–6.5 (substrate) or 5.5–6.2 (hydro), the plant physically cannot absorb nitrogen even if there's plenty in the substrate. The symptoms are identical to a true deficiency.
Diagnosis: measure the pH of the runoff water. Above 7.0 or below 5.5? Lockout. Adding nutrients won't help — the plant can't reach them. Flush first with pH-adjusted water (pH 6.0), then feed again.
2. Overwatering (mix-up #2)
Waterlogged roots can't take up nutrients. Leaves yellow, look limp, the plant seems starved — but the substrate is soaked.
Diagnosis: lift the pot. Feels heavy? Push a finger 3 cm into the substrate — does it feel wet? Then: stop watering, move the pot somewhere with airflow, and wait until the substrate is back to ~50% of its dry weight before watering again.
3. Magnesium deficiency (mix-up #3)
Mg deficiency looks like N deficiency but differs on one point: the yellowing starts between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green (interveinal chlorosis). N deficiency, by contrast, yellows the whole leaf uniformly. Full walk-through: Cannabis Magnesium Deficiency.
Diagnosis: look closely at one yellow leaf. See green "veins" on a yellow background? Magnesium. Uniform yellow with no vein pattern? Nitrogen or pH.
Concrete correction schedule
Once you've verified through the checklist above that it really is nitrogen (uniform yellow, starting at the bottom, pH 5.8–6.5, not overwatered, no interveinal pattern), follow this schedule:
Step 1 — measure current EC
Collect runoff water from the pot. Measure EC. Targets:
- Late seedling / early veg: EC 0.8–1.2
- Full vegetation: EC 1.4–1.8
- Early flower: EC 1.6–2.0
- Late flower: EC 1.2–1.6 (declining)
Are you 0.4+ below the target for your stage? Then adding N is justified.
Step 2 — feed, but in measured doses
Raise your feeding schedule by 0.5 ml/L of a grow-stage nutrient (Bio-Grow, GH FloraGro, or equivalent: 0.3 g/L calcium nitrate, or an N-rich 20-10-10 organic feed at 1 g/L). No more. Overcompensating burns leaf tips within 3 days. Browse grow-stage nutrients on Amazon.
Feed at this higher dose on the next watering. The EC of the input water should now sit around EC 1.6–1.8 for a veg plant.
Step 3 — observe 48 hours
A true deficiency response: new top leaves visibly darken to green within 48 hours. Existing yellow leaves will not turn green again — that damage is permanent. The plant reinvests N into new growth.
No improvement after 72 hours? Then it wasn't an N deficiency. Go back to the look-alikes section. Most likely: a pH lockout you missed.
Step 4 — prevention
Once recovered, hold the adjusted EC. Cannabis is a heavy feeder. A schedule that works in week 4 can already be too weak by week 6. Re-test EC and pH weekly with a Apera PH60 pH meter.
When NOT to correct
- Late flower (week 11+): yellow is normal — your "deficiency" is just the plant preparing for harvest.
- 1–2 lower leaves in early flower: also normal, the plant is redistributing.
- Light yellow with no further decline: if the plant keeps growing and the top is dark green, leave it.
Adding N unnecessarily in late flower is a classic beginner mistake. It dulls flavor, slows ripening, and leaves "green" aromas in your harvest.
Summary — 30-second diagnosis
- Which stage? Late flower → probably normal, leave it.
- Which leaves? Bottom only → possibly N. Top and bottom → something else.
- Yellowing pattern? Uniform → N or pH. Between the veins → magnesium.
- Runoff pH? Outside 5.8–6.5 → fix pH first, don't feed.
- Substrate moisture? Soaked → overwatering, not a feeding problem.
- Runoff EC? More than 0.4 below the stage target → feed +0.5 ml/L grow nutrient.
- 48 hours later: new top darker green? Bingo. No improvement? Not N.
