LST (low-stress training) is the cheapest yield-boosting technique in indoor growing: all it takes is wire and patience, no equipment. Done well it raises yield 30–50% per plant without stressing it. What LST is, and why it works
LST is the mechanical bending and tying-down of cannabis branches to make the plant grow horizontally instead of vertically. From a natural Christmas-tree shape to a flat, wide canopy where light falls evenly on every bud site.
Cannabis naturally grows with apical dominance: the main top produces hormones (auxins) that suppress the side branches. The result: one big top cola and 10–15 mini side buds below light level. By pulling the main top horizontal you break that dominance. Side branches get equal light, and the plant produces 5–15 big colas instead of 1 + 10 small ones.
The payoff: done well, LST delivers 30–50% more final yield per plant, with no extra electricity, nutrients, or substrate. The only investment: your time in weeks 2–6 of growth.

LST — Low-Stress Training (this guide)
You bend branches without damaging them. No stress, no recovery week. Works from day 1 of veg. Reversible: you can let a branch stand back up if you make a mistake.
For: beginners, smaller grows, autoflowers (which can't handle stress).
HST — High-Stress Training (topping, FIM, super-cropping)
You cut or break branches deliberately to force regrowth. The plant gets 4–7 days of recovery stress. Higher yield potential but riskier.
For: experienced growers, photoperiod plants with a long veg phase, single-cola ScrOG setups.
When to start LST?
Too early = branches too brittle
Before week 2 of veg the branches are herbaceous: they snap when bent. Only start once the plant has at least 4–5 true leaf sets and the main stem begins its first woodiness (light brown at the base).
Too late = branches too woody
After week 5–6 of veg the branches are so woody they break instead of bend. You can still LST young side branches, but not the main stem.
Sweet spot
Start between week 2 and week 5 of veg. For autoflowers: between day 14 and day 25 — after that pre-flower comes too fast to shape effectively.
Continue during flower? Light LST in the first 2 weeks of flower is still fine (the stretch phase, branches still flexible). After that, stop — bending during late flower damages the phloem and costs yield.
Materials — about $3 total
LST is deliberately low-tech. What you need:
- Coated plant tie or soft garden wire (galvanized steel with a green PVC coating, 1.5–2 mm). The soft coating keeps the wire from cutting into the stem. Amazon stocks rolls for a few dollars that yield hundreds of feet.
- Or: coated twist-ties (green plastic strips from the garden store) — works just as well
- Or: a cleaning-tie from a kitchen roll holder — free
- Forbidden: bare steel wire, iron wire, tape or string directly on the stem. It cuts in, damages the phloem, and the plant gets infected through the wound.
Optional: a few small drilled holes in the top rim of your pot to thread the wire ends through. Or just wrap tight around the pot.
The actual LST steps
Step 1 — first bend of the main top (week 2–3)
- Wrap a piece of coated wire under the top set of leaves, not through the leaf nodes
- Make a loose ~2-inch loop around the stem — not tight: a finger should fit between
- Gently pull the main top 90° to the side toward the pot rim, until the stem lies horizontal at 2–4 inches above the substrate
- Fix the other end to the pot rim (a drilled hole or tight around the rim)
- The plant now looks like it's been knocked over. That's correct.
Within 24–48 hours the plant points its main top back up (toward the light). The side branches along the stem, now all getting equal light, start shooting up as if each were a main top.
Step 2 — secondary bends (week 3–4)
Once side branches have grown 2+ inches up (usually 4–7 days after Step 1), bend the strongest 4–8 side branches down too:
- In different directions — you want a flat canopy like a star, not all to one side
- Bend branches that get too long toward the pot rim
- Smaller branches less far — just enough to keep them out of apical dominance
- All side-branch tops at the same height as the main top — an even canopy = even yield per site
Step 3 — maintenance (week 4–6)
The plant grows outward instead of up. Check every 2–3 days:
- Branch standing back up? → re-bend it, lower
- Branch going woody where the wire sits? → loosen it before it pinches
- Canopy even? → bend the longest branches further out
Goal by end of week 5: canopy = a flat circle or square with 5–15 tops within 2 inches of height difference.
Step 4 — final touch in early flower (week 7–8)
During the "stretch" (the first 2 weeks of flower after the flip to 12/12) branches grow another 50–100%. Final corrections:
- Bend back any outliers before the flip
- Loosen the wires a little — branches thicken during stretch
- No new bends after week 2 of flower
The mistake 80% make: impatience
The biggest beginner mistake: LST once in week 3 and thinking "done." But LST isn't a one-time intervention — it's a 3–4 week process of repeated mini-corrections.
If you bend only once:
- One slightly-more-horizontal plant, but 80% of the yield bonus is missed
- Side branches that shoot up anyway and re-develop apical dominance
- A mid-yield plant instead of a max-yield plant
Rule of thumb: 2 minutes with your plant every 3 days. A quick look, a quick re-tie. 10 min/week of investment = 30–50% more yield.
What if a branch breaks?
It happens: bent too far, you hear a "crack." Cannabis is robust:
- Stop bending — no more adjusting
- Make a clean break before it grows worse
- Wrap plant repair tape (white self-adhesive stretch tape) tight around the break — like a cast
- Give the plant 5–7 days of rest, no further training on that branch
- In 90% of breaks the plant heals and continues — often a thicker "knuckle" forms at the break point that makes the branch stronger (the super-cropping principle)
Combining LST + ScrOG
For maximum effect: combine LST with a ScrOG net (Screen of Green). Stretch a net horizontally 10–12 inches above the substrate and weave the growing tops over the net. The net does what wire does, but for 100% of your plant at once. ScrOG nets on Amazon.
First LST for the base shape, then add the ScrOG net in weeks 4–5. The combination yields, in a 3×3 tent, an average of 400–600 g per m² instead of 250–350 g without training.
