First: what "hydroponics" actually means
Hydroponics is growing without classic soil — the plant gets nutrients via a water solution instead of from organic substrate. The downsides: a steeper learning curve, one measurement error can ruin a whole crop, and startup costs are higher.

1. Soil — for the absolute beginner
What it is: plant in a pot with organic substrate (Biobizz All-Mix or similar). Water + organic nutrients regularly.
Upsides: the highest error tolerance of any system. The substrate acts as a buffer — a day of too much or too little feed is absorbed by the organic material. Cheapest startup. No pumps, no electricity dependence, no reservoir.
Downsides: slowest growth (10–25% slower than hydro). Higher risk of pests (fungus gnats). Substrate is heavier to replace.

2. Coco — the "soft hydroponic"
What it is: coconut-fiber substrate instead of soil. Looks like soil (porous), but behaves like hydro — coco doesn't buffer nutrients, so every watering IS the feed.
Upsides: faster growth than soil (+10–15%). Lighter substrate, easier to replace. Better pH behavior than heavy clay soils. Compatible with the same nutrients as hydro systems, so you learn the schedule you'll need for heavier systems later.
Downsides: daily waterings needed (sometimes 2× in late flower) — coco dries faster than soil. Cal-Mag is mandatory (coco binds calcium). Check pH at every watering.

3. DWC (Deep Water Culture) — the popular first hydro system
What it is: roots hang in an aerated nutrient solution in a bucket or reservoir. An air stone (fed by an air pump) keeps constant oxygen around the roots.
Upsides: the fastest growth of the "affordable" systems (+20–25% over soil). Constant water access, no dry days. Simple hardware (PowerGrow DWC single-bucket kit — includes net pot, air pump + stone).
Downsides: one power outage = roots suffocate within 6–8 hours. Root rot is a real risk in summer (reservoir above 72 °F / 22 °C). Pump maintenance (the air stone clogs every 4–6 weeks).

4. NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) — for multi-plant setups
What it is: a thin (1–3 mm) film of nutrient solution flows continuously over roots in a sloped channel. Central reservoir, pump, return.
Upsides: the most effective system for 4+ plants at once (one reservoir for all). Maintenance barely scales with plant count. The highest margin for error once it's running stable.
Downsides: highest startup cost. Pump failure = total crop loss within 4 hours (no reservoir buffer). Install + dial-in is a weekend's work.
Best for: a 2nd-year grower with 4–8 plant ambitions, in a tent bigger than 3×3 ft.
5. Aeroponics — high-end, for the expert
What it is: roots hang in air. A spray mist (intervals of 30–60 sec every 3–5 min) delivers nutrients straight to the roots. Extremely oxygen-rich.
Upsides: highest yield ceiling of all systems (+30–40%). Fastest root development. No root rot possible (constant air contact).
Downsides: highest price. A clogged nozzle = roots dry within 1–2 hours. Requires EC/pH skill at the highest level (no buffer anywhere). Crop failures are expensive.
Best for: NOT recommended for beginners. Only consider after 5+ successful DWC/NFT cycles.
Decision tree: which do you choose now?
- First time growing ever? → Soil. Learn the basics with the highest margin for error.
- Done 1–3 cycles in soil, ready to step up? → Coco. Faster, better prep for real hydro.
- Coco mastered, comfortable with EC/pH, 1–3 plant setup? → DWC. The golden middle between speed and complexity.
- 4+ plant ambition, budget $300+? → NFT.
- Expert with 5+ years, maximum yield? → Aeroponics.
What all systems have in common
Whichever system you pick, these are always needed:
