Why EC matters more than what's on the nutrient bottle
EC (electrical conductivity, measured in mS/cm or mmhos/cm) is the total dissolved salts in your nutrient solution. It tells you what the plant is actually exposed to — not what the bottle said you mixed. Two reasons this number matters more than the recipe:
- Tap water varies dramatically. Amsterdam tap water has EC ~0.4 baseline. Hard-water regions (parts of UK, Germany) hit 0.8-1.2 from the tap before you add anything. If you follow a feeding schedule that says "EC 1.6", and your water is 0.8, you're 50% over the target with the fabrikant-recommended dose.
- Salt build-up is invisible until it isn't. In soil and coco, salts accumulate every feed. Runoff EC climbs week over week even if your feed EC stays flat. These ranges work for both soil and coco. Hydro/DWC sits about 0.1-0.2 lower in each stage because the plant absorbs from a constant solution rather than a buffered medium. If your feed is at the high end of these ranges and runoff still climbs above the ceiling, your tap water is contributing more EC than you think — measure your tap water EC first.
Calibration discipline (matters more than the meter)

What to skip
- "4-in-1" or "5-in-1" gadgets under $30. The EC probe on these is a metal pin, not a platinum-black sensor. They drift the moment you open the package and read 0.3+ mS/cm off from reality.
- TDS pens that don't show EC. TDS (parts per million) is EC × a scale factor (usually 500 or 700) chosen by the manufacturer. Cannabis nutrient schedules are written in EC for a reason — the scale-factor confusion means a "ppm 1000" pen reads 1000 on a 500-scale meter but a 700-scale meter reads 1400 for the exact same solution. Buy in EC, convert if you need to.

What about RO water? Reverse-osmosis water has EC near 0 (typically 0.02-0.08). You can feed at exactly the recipe EC without subtracting tap-water baseline. Useful in hard-water regions; not worth the $200-400 RO system if your tap is < 0.4.
